this seminal chiptune album was released in 1998 in a somewhat roughshod fashion with the underscore label. the third of 3 high-run cdr releases, it served for many to be a crash course in hybridized 8bit music. due to some of the constraints in processing, the sound quality was not optimal or even correct and true to how the songs were written in their original form. these tracks have been lovingly restored and remastered for 2020 and available again online for the first time.

8bit 2020 includes choice cuts from the tss discography that sowed the seeds for later releases such as unstable mutation, pappyland, the ubiquitious com-trex, and the unforgettable son of biah. if you caught it on cdr, you were one of the chosen few. if not, hear it remastered as it was intended to be. this is afx 13.

Outstanding instrumental metal album that happens to pay tribute to FFVII. While some of the songs would pretty clearly lend themselves to great metal covers (Bombing Mission, The Chase, Let The Battles Begin), I was most impressed by how much some of the deeper cuts (eg. Mako Reactor) came to life as ripping headbangers. There’s not a weak track on here and the chronological arrangement further complements my enjoyment of the album. Highly recommended. Lloyd James
